Evora

Evora is a small town in the province of Alentejo (Alentejo), rich in its history.  Here he received the blessing of Vasco da Gama’s travels, and the Roman temple of Diana was preserved here.  This fortress has been preserved in almost its original form, where you can easily get lost in the medieval streets.

Evora, first of all, is a university city, which means it is dynamic and full of life in it.

The history of this city began about 2 thousand years ago.  The Romans called this city Liberalitas-Julia, and in Évora you can still see buildings reminiscent of that era.

Évora is a city of marble, the most ancient churches dating back to the 10th century, which are beautifully preserved.  And also a city of traditions. It is from here that the famous, traditional for the winter, wool capes and raincoats, trimmed with fur, are brought.  For adults and children.

Beja

Originally the city was called Pax-Julia.  This name was once given to him by Julius Caesar himself.  But, for centuries, the city had no luck. Being in a favorable territorial position, brought many conflicts. Each side dreamed of winning Beja.

Now it is a cozy town in which there is an airport.  He is famous for stunning sheep cheeses, olives and the famous sweet pumpkin pastries.  The city is attractive for agricultural investment. The suburbs of Beja are full of olive plantations.

In the city itself, which retained the compactness of the building, you can see the impressive castle of the XIII century, which replaced the defensive fortification, which was previously built here by the Romans, later the Moors. The central tower of the castle is considered the highest in Portugal and reaches a height of 40 m (Torre de Menagem).  Climb the spiral staircase to 197 steps and enjoy the striking view of the city and the surrounding forests stretching into the distance.

The main attraction of the city is the monastery of Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Convento da Nossa Senhora da Conceição), decorated in Manueline style. In addition, you will see bright azulejos in a purely Moorish style, a luxurious baroque chapel and stunning rococo gilt.

And in the former monastery there is an interesting local museum, where archaeological finds and a good collection of paintings are exhibited.  A unique Museum of Visigoth Art (Museu Visigotico) has been opened in the oldest church, Beja Santo Amaru.

Beja has unique architectural treasures: the temple of St. Amaro dating back to the pre-Romanesque era and the museum of Queen Leonor.  This is a national monument full of treasures, located in a former monastery, dating from the XV century.

You can stay in a beautiful hotel, which turned into a monastery of São Francisco.
